Newport RI Walking & Hiking Paths. Newport is probably one of the most "walking-friendly" towns in the country. Built during the colonial era of the 1600's and 1700's, its streets are very narrow (many are one-way) with the houses tightly packed together.

Everyone should experience this amazing town, and we loved our stay here. Whether you're a traveling as a family or a couple, this town has a lot to offer. Any local will tell you what makes it special is the fantastic museums and spectacular food. Newport is a charming coastal town in the state of Rhode Island.

Best Months to Visit

The best time to visit Newport is between March and May and from September to November. In May (the end of the spring season) and September (the start of the autumn season), mild temperatures and few rain showers mean you'll have ideal weather for exploring the city's famous mansions.

The walk runs 3.5 miles and about two-thirds of the walk is in easy walking condition. In the spring of 2015, sixteen (16) QR code trail markers were installed at significant locations along the walk that provide information on the gilded age mansions as well as geographic and geological features.

The free hop-on hop-off trolley, which was debuted in 2022, offers transportation around Newport to tourist destinations. This includes all service on Route 67 (Bellevue/Salve Regina Univ). The service is made possible by the support of (Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIOTA) and Discover Newport.

Nestled just steps from the waterfront, Thames Street has been Newport's main commercial drag since the 18th century. Here you'll find a collection of local shops like Thames Glass and Newport Fudgery, as well as more conventional stores like Express and Banana Republic.

The easiest way to get around Newport is on foot and by trolley. Many of the city's top hotels are located within walking distance of downtown Newport, and popular attractions like the Cliff Walk and Newport's historic mansions can be reached by the city's trolley.

The city of Newport was known for its wealth in the 20th century. However, the actual town of Newport is not as wealthy as many think: its median household income is only a mere $40,669, actually below the national median (and only the forty-second-highest in the state).

More than 400 miles of coastline affords beautiful beaches and sprawling sandy seasides here in and around Newport. Whether you're looking to bask in the water or sink into a beach chair with your toes in the sand, these beaches have just what you need: sand, sunshine and the perfect amount of sea breeze.

Length of visit

Please allow approximately 90 minutes to visit each house, including travel time to other Newport Mansions. Allow for more travel time if visiting Green Animals Topiary Garden, which is 30 minutes north of Newport.

With a week to explore Rhode Island, you can easily see the state's key towns and cities and enjoy a sampling of its major attractions. This approach begins in Providence and then steers you down through the state's coastal hubs, ending in Bristol, just an hour's drive from Providence.

These are the best months to visit Newport Beach. You can expect sunshine almost every day, and although it'll be crowded, you're sure to find space on one of the area's many beaches. The peak season comes with higher prices, though, so you'll pay a little extra when it comes to lodging.
